The Parc de Bagatelle is defined by its sprawling, lush grounds tucked into the Bois de Boulogne, punctuated by small stone bridges, artificial waterfalls, and a namesake eighteenth-century château. The estate owes its existence to a wager in seventeen seventy-seven between Queen Marie Antoinette and her brother-in-law, the Count of Artois. The Count bet the Queen he could build a residence on this site in under three months; with nine hundred laborers and architect François-Joseph Bélanger working around the clock, the project was finished in sixty-four days.
