Statue of Marshal Gallieni

The monument on Place Vauban consists of a bronze statue of Marshal Joseph Gallieni standing atop a stone pedestal. Created by sculptor Jean Boucher and inaugurated in nineteen twenty-six, the work features four figures at the base representing the city of Paris and three territories where Gallieni served during his colonial career: Tonkin, French Sudan, and Madagascar. The pedestal is inscribed with a pledge Gallieni made in September nineteen fourteen to defend Paris against invaders, reflecting his role as the Military Governor of Paris during the First World War.
