The Polish National School, known locally as the École des Batignolles, is defined by its series of brick, stone, and slate buildings arranged around a secluded interior courtyard. Founded in eighteen forty-two by Polish exiles following the November Uprising, the institution moved to this location on rue Lamandé in eighteen seventy-four. It was established to provide children of the Great Emigration with a connection to their native language, history, and culture at a time when Poland did not exist as an independent state.
