The Bal Mabille was once a celebrated open-air dance hall that occupied the space between forty-nine and fifty-three Avenue Montaigne. Founded in eighteen thirty-one by a dance instructor named Mabille, it began as a private teaching space before his sons expanded it into a lavish, artificial garden in eighteen forty-four. The grounds featured sand paths, a Chinese pavilion, and thousands of gas lamps that allowed the festivities to continue long after dark.
