Statue de Pierre-Paul Riquet

monument

The statue of Pierre-Paul Riquet is a white marble figure standing atop a pedestal at the head of the Allées Jean-Jaurès. Sculpted by Bernard Griffoul-Dorval, it was unveiled in eighteen fifty-three to commemorate the engineer behind the Canal du Midi. Riquet is depicted in seventeenth-century attire, holding a scroll of his plans, with one arm outstretched in a gesture toward the waterway he designed to connect the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean.
