The Marché Victor Hugo is a sprawling, concrete structure that combines a traditional food market on its ground floor with a multi-level parking garage above. It sits on a square originally laid out in eighteen twenty-seven as the Marché-au-Bois, a place for selling timber and fodder, before it took the name of the poet Victor Hugo in eighteen eighty-six.
