Fish Market

The Fish Market is a square along the Rhine River marked by a row of narrow, colorful, pastel-hued houses with steep roofs. These buildings stand directly before the massive Romanesque towers of the Great Saint Martin Church. While the area today hosts restaurants and cafes, the site functioned as a central trading hub for fish beginning in the twelfth century. Merchants once stored and processed herring, cod, and salmon within the nearby Stapelhaus, a warehouse that remains a prominent part of the square.
