The Sanskrit College and University (State University)

The Sanskrit College and University is marked by its colonnaded Gothic facade, featuring tall Ionic columns and expansive balconies that overlook the busy College Street. Established in eighteen twenty-four, the institution was founded by the East India Company to provide formal instruction in Hindu classics, philosophy, and law. Its building, completed in eighteen twenty-six, served as a center for indigenous learning when such formal education for the Hindu population was otherwise limited.
