The Metropolitan Building rises near the Esplanade crossing with a signature neo-baroque profile, defined by its corner domes, a central clock tower, and a facade of arched windows and Corinthian columns. Built in nineteen oh five by the construction firm Mackintosh Burn and Company, this structure was originally the headquarters and retail emporium of the Whiteway Laidlaw department store.
