Metcalfe Hall

Metcalfe Hall rises above its surroundings on a ten-foot-high solid basement, distinguished by thirty massive Corinthian columns that wrap around the entire building. Designed by city magistrate Charles Knowles Robinson and completed in eighteen forty-four, the structure draws its architectural inspiration from the Tower of the Winds in ancient Athens. It occupies the junction of Strand Road and Hare Street, facing westward toward the Hooghly River.
