Nahoum and Sons is a century-old bakery tucked inside the New Market complex, identifiable by its dark teak-wood counters, high ceilings, and a display of glass-fronted cases filled with rum balls, fruit cakes, and cheese samosas. Founded in nineteen oh two by Nahoum Israel Mordecai, a Baghdadi Jewish immigrant, the shop began as a door-to-door operation before settling into this permanent storefront in nineteen sixteen.
