New Market is a sprawling Victorian Gothic arcade on Lindsay Street, distinguished by its red-brick facade, tall spires, and a large clock tower at its southern end. Opened on January first, eighteen seventy-four, it was built by the Calcutta Corporation to provide a dedicated shopping space for the city's British residents. Local elites at the time grew increasingly averse to the crowded, traditional bazaars where they had to interact with the native population, so they commissioned the architect Richard Roskell Bayne to design a private, regulated alternative that would replace the old Fenwick’s Bazaar.
