The Writers' Building is marked by its long, red-brick façade that stretches along the northern edge of the Lal Dighi pond in the heart of the B.B.D. Bagh district. Designed by Thomas Lyon and completed in seventeen eighty, it holds the distinction of being the first three-story building in Calcutta. It was originally constructed to house the junior clerks of the East India Company, who were known as "writers," and served as their place of residence and work.
