University of Calcutta

The University of Calcutta is marked by the long, distinctive facade of the Ashutosh Building, which stretches along College Street. Established on January twenty-fourth, eighteen fifty-seven, it was the first modern university in India, created by the East India Company on the model of the University of London. At its founding, its jurisdiction was vast, covering a territory that reached from Lahore to Rangoon and Colombo.
