Paramount Cold Drinks & Syrups

Paramount Cold Drinks and Syrups on Bankim Chatterjee Street is identifiable by its weathered signboard and a front room crowded with marble-topped tables and wooden benches. Established in nineteen eighteen, the shop began under the name Paradise. It served as a covert meeting place for Indian revolutionaries during the period of British rule, using the sale of sherbets as a cover for their anti-colonial planning. When the colonial authorities eventually uncovered the activity and closed the shop in the nineteen thirties, the founder, Nihar Ranjan Majumdar, reopened it under its current name.
