Presidency University

Presidency University, situated on College Street, is defined by the grand, classical-style architecture of its main building and its status as one of the oldest centers of modern, western-style higher education in Asia. Established in eighteen seventeen as Hindoo College, it was a pioneering, private initiative led by figures such as Raja Rammohun Roy and David Hare to promote a liberal, secular curriculum. In eighteen fifty-five, the British government took over the institution and renamed it Presidency College, marking its transition into a state-run hub for science and the humanities.
