The Shaheed Minar is a forty-eight-meter-tall column that stands out for its eclectic mix of styles, featuring an Egyptian-style base, a Syrian-style column, and a Turkish dome. Built in eighteen twenty-eight as the Ochterlony Monument, the tower originally honored Major General Sir David Ochterlony of the British East India Company for his military victories against the Marathas and the Gurkhas. Mark Twain famously nicknamed this structure the cloud-kissing monument.
