The Atomic Bomb Dome is identifiable by its skeletal steel roof frame, which remains exposed against the skyline. Originally completed in nineteen fifteen as the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall, it was a European-style building designed by the Czech architect Jan Letzel. It served as a landmark for art exhibitions and the promotion of local products until the final months of the second world war.
