Hiroshima Victims Memorial Cenotaph

The Hiroshima Victims Memorial Cenotaph is defined by a heavy concrete arch, curved in the shape of a traditional saddle to shelter the souls of those lost to the atomic bombing of August sixth, nineteen forty-five. Located within the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, this simple, stone-clad monument was built in nineteen fifty-two as one of the first official commemorations in the city. Beneath the arch sits a chest containing a registry of the names of more than two hundred and ninety-seven thousand victims, a record that grows every year as more people pass away from radiation-related afflictions.
