The Fukuromachi Elementary School Peace Museum is defined by the surviving concrete shell of the school's west building, which stands as a stark contrast to the modern facilities surrounding it. Located four hundred sixty meters from the hypocenter of the nineteen forty-five atomic bombing, the school was nearly leveled in the blast. While the school's wooden structures were consumed by fire, this reinforced concrete annex held firm, sheltering three students in its basement during the explosion.
