The Koninklijke Schouwburg, or Royal Theatre, is distinguished by a semicircular cour d'honneur, a curved front courtyard that separates the building from the street. Designed by architect Pieter de Swart in seventeen seventy-six, the structure was originally a city palace for Prince Karel Christiaan van Nassau-Weilburg and Princess Carolina van Orange-Nassau.
