The Mauritshuis is defined by four symmetrical stone facades and towering columns that reach the full height of the building. This seventeenth-century city palace was built between sixteen thirty-three and sixteen forty-four for Count Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen. He commissioned the residence while serving as the governor-general of the Dutch colony in Brazil. When he returned to The Hague in sixteen forty-four, he occupied the house for only a few years before moving to Germany.
