Prison Gate Museum

The Prison Gate, or Gevangenpoort, is a dark, medieval stone structure that once served as the primary entrance to the castle of the Counts of Holland. Built around thirteen hundred, it looms over the Buitenhof in the center of The Hague. By the fifteenth century, this gate evolved into the most significant prison for the Court of Holland, holding suspects awaiting interrogation and trial for four hundred years until its closure in eighteen twenty-eight.
