Standbeeld van Johan de Witt

The bronze statue of Johan de Witt stands on a stone pedestal in the center of the square known as De Plaats. Created by sculptor Frederik Engel Jeltsema and unveiled in nineteen eighteen, the monument depicts the seventeenth-century statesman holding a roll of paper to his chest with his left hand. A specific detail in the sculpture shows De Witt with two fingers extended, pointing toward the nearby Gevangenpoort, or Prison Gate.
