Jan Matejko Square

landmark

Jan Matejko Square is defined by the towering Grunwald Monument, which stands in the center of the open space. This bronze statue depicts King Władysław II Jagiełło on horseback, commemorating the five-hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, where Polish and Lithuanian forces defeated the Teutonic Order in fourteen ten. The square itself bears the name of the nineteenth-century painter Jan Matejko, who was granted honorary citizenship by the city council while still alive.
