Die Braak

Die Braak is a large, grassy town square in the center of Stellenbosch, identifiable by its expansive open space that spans roughly the area of two rugby fields. The name translates to fallow land, reflecting its long history as an empty parcel kept clear among the town’s growing structures. In seventeen oh three, it began serving as an exercise field and military parade ground for the local burgher militia.
