Van Riebeeck Street is marked by the historic oak trees that line its length, which were proclaimed as national monuments in nineteen sixty-eight. Running between Plein Street and Jonkershoek Road, this thoroughfare once served as a quiet, rural dirt road known as the wagon road to Jonkershoek. Long ago, the character of the street was defined by dairy cows walking to pasture and children who were paid a penny per tin to collect acorns to feed local pigs.
