Rooiplein

The Rooiplein is a distinctive, large pedestrian square paved in red brick, situated at the center of the Stellenbosch University campus. Its name translates from Afrikaans as "Red Square," a reference both to its color and to the main city square in Moscow. This site was not always a paved plaza; before the nineteen thirties, the area served as a sports field, and in the nineteen sixties, it was a space defined by lush lawns and bougainvillea-covered arches.
