Dorp Street is defined by an expansive, uninterrupted canopy of mature oak trees that shade a long row of historic buildings. Originally serving as the primary wagon route between Cape Town and the inland settlements, the street began to take its current shape after the first plots were appointed along its path in seventeen ten. Today, the thoroughfare holds national monument status for preserving one of the largest concentrations of old structures in any South African town.
