The Grand Brighton is a Victorian hotel on the seafront, recognizable by its pale, ornate facade and sweeping, one-hundred-and-twenty-three-step staircase inside. It opened on July twenty-first, eighteen sixty-four, as a palace by the sea, designed by architect John Whichcord Junior. When it first welcomed guests, it featured what were then cutting-edge hydraulic lifts, called ascending omnibuses, to carry travelers up to the fifth floor.
