Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences

The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences is identified by the massive, carved stone figures of prehistoric animals that decorate the entrance stairs. Founded in seventeen twenty-eight, it holds the oldest university collections in Cambridge. While the building opened in nineteen oh four to honor the geologist Adam Sedgwick, the core of the museum began much earlier with the private collection of Doctor John Woodward. His original samples, which include pieces collected by Isaac Newton, are still housed in their early walnut cabinets.
