The Grapes

The Grapes on Mathew Street stands out for its deep red, cream, and black exterior paint, a color scheme chosen to return the building to its historic appearance. Dating to eighteen hundred and four, the pub was built on the site of an even earlier tavern. During the early nineteen sixties, it stood surrounded by warehouses as the only pub on the street, making it a regular refuge for The Beatles. Because the nearby Cavern Club did not serve alcohol, the band members frequently drank here before and after their performances.
