North Point was once a prominent cape jutting into the San Francisco Bay at the foot of Telegraph Hill. Long before the city grew to its present size, this jagged point marked a key geographic feature near the original Yerba Buena anchorage. Over decades, the surrounding water was filled in to create new land, permanently altering the coastline and pushing the bay further away from the original cape.
