Murphy Windmill

The Murphy Windmill stands ninety-five feet tall at the southwestern edge of Golden Gate Park, its four massive sails extending one hundred fourteen feet across. This structure is distinguished by the unique clockwise rotation of those sails, a departure from the counterclockwise motion common to traditional Dutch windmills. Completed in nineteen oh eight, the mill was funded by a twenty-thousand-dollar donation from Samuel G. Murphy, a local banker who sought to provide an affordable water source for the park.
