Queen Wilhelmina Garden

The Queen Wilhelmina Garden is anchored by a massive, wooden-shingled Dutch windmill that rises above the western edge of Golden Gate Park. This structure, known as the North Windmill, was built in nineteen oh three to pump thirty thousand gallons of groundwater per hour. Its purpose was to irrigate the surrounding landscape, which was originally nothing but shifting, windswept sand dunes.
