Marine Exchange Point Lobos Lookout Station

The Marine Exchange Point Lobos Lookout Station is an eight-sided building hidden by trees on a hill above the Lands End parking lot. Completed in nineteen twenty-seven, it served as a critical node in a maritime communications network that dated back to the Gold Rush. When a ship appeared near the Farallones, the lookout used a large telescope to identify it, then relayed the news to businesses at the Embarcadero so that tugs, drayage companies, and hotels could prepare for the vessel's arrival.
