The verdant fairways and quiet paths of the Lincoln Park Golf Course conceal the former site of the Golden Gate Cemetery. Established in eighteen seventy, this municipal burial ground sprawled across two hundred acres of windswept sand and scrub in the Richmond District. It served as a final resting place for roughly twenty-nine thousand people, including many of the city’s early immigrants, laborers, and indigent residents.
