Battery Livingston

Battery Livingston is a massive, reinforced concrete structure defined by its four sunken mortar pits. It sits on the high headland of Point Lobos as a primary component of the Fort Miley military reservation. Construction began in November eighteen ninety-nine to create a coastal defense system during the Endicott Period, a time when the United States modernized its harbor fortifications. By the time it was finished in nineteen zero-two, the battery held sixteen twelve-inch mortars designed to lob heavy shells onto the decks of enemy ships from over the horizon.
