USS San Francisco Memorial

The USS San Francisco Memorial at Land's End is marked by a raw, jagged section of the heavy cruiser’s own bridge wings. This memorial consists of the actual steel salvaged from the ship, displaying the holes torn by gunfire during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on November thirteenth, nineteen forty-two. Instead of a polished sculpture, the site presents these heavy-gauge plates, left in the same condition as they were when they survived one of the most intense, close-quarters naval engagements of the second world war.
