Battery Chester

Battery Chester is a cluster of reinforced concrete gun emplacements marking the western edge of the Fort Miley Military Reservation. You can recognize these ruins by their heavy, sunken concrete walls and the open, grassy clearings where three massive twelve-inch rifled guns once stood on disappearing carriages. Built between eighteen ninety-nine and nineteen oh three, the battery was engineered to rotate and fire at approaching ships from all three channels of the Golden Gate.
