The ruins of the Sutro Baths are identifiable by the network of concrete foundations, saltwater tanks, and rusted iron remnants set into the rugged cliffs at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Opened in eighteen ninety-six by former San Francisco mayor Adolph Sutro, this site was once the world’s largest indoor swimming establishment. The structure featured seven pools holding nearly two million gallons of water, which were replenished by the powerful Pacific tides or a massive turbine pump located at sea level.
