The Inner Sunset is defined by its compact commercial hub centered at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Irving Street, where local bakeries and restaurants have replaced the windblown sand dunes that once covered this entire western portion of San Francisco. Before the late nineteenth century, this area was known as the Outside Lands, a sparsely inhabited landscape of shifting sands that developers considered largely impassable.
