The Farm (San Francisco)

The Farm once occupied seven acres of asphalt and vacant land tucked beneath the concrete pillars of the freeway interchange at Cesar Chavez Street and Potrero Avenue. From nineteen seventy-four to nineteen eighty-seven, this space operated as an ambitious, living art project where vegetable gardens and fruit orchards grew alongside livestock, including goats and rabbits. Founded by Bonnie Ora Sherk and Jack Wickert, the site functioned as a community hub that contained a school, an art gallery, a theater, and a communal kitchen.
