The Atherton House, located at nineteen ninety California Street, stands out for its eclectic blend of Queen Anne and Stick-Eastlake architectural styles, marked by a short corner tower and a distinctive clipped gable. Built between eighteen eighty-one and eighteen eighty-two for Dominga de Goñi Atherton, the mansion was designed to reflect the status of one of San Francisco’s prominent families following the death of land speculator Faxon Dean Atherton.
