Battery Bluff Park is defined by the four massive, historic concrete gun batteries—Blaney, Baldwin, Slaughter, and Sherwood—that anchor the six-acre site. These structures, built by the United States Army between eighteen ninety-nine and nineteen oh two, once held artillery designed to defend San Francisco Bay against potential maritime threats. Though they could hit targets up to twelve miles out at sea, the guns were never fired in battle and were ultimately removed in nineteen twenty.
