The SOMArts Cultural Center occupies a massive, twenty-six thousand square foot industrial building on Brannan Street, identifiable by its expansive interior space and high ceilings. Originally a shipbuilding warehouse from the nineteen twenties, the structure now serves as a civic hub for community-based art. It was established as a nonprofit in nineteen seventy-nine, emerging from the Neighborhood Arts Movement, which sought to provide resources and performance space to artists who operated outside the city’s traditional cultural institutions.
