The heavy, rusted iron anchor resting on the corner of Steiner and Greenwich Streets weighs nearly three tons. It is the most visible remnant of the steamship S.S. City of Rio de Janeiro, which met a tragic end in February nineteen oh one. The ship struck a reef near the Golden Gate during a period of dense fog and sank within minutes, taking one hundred and twenty-eight lives with it. Divers recovered this massive anchor decades after the disaster, and it remains in the Marina as a silent marker of one of the city's most significant maritime catastrophes.
