The Fort Mason flagpole occupies a tree-covered circle in the center of what was once the post’s main thoroughfare. For many years, this spot served as the heart of military life at the site, where soldiers gathered for the daily ritual of raising and lowering the colors. A bugler signaled the beginning and end of each day with a call that brought the post to a halt, requiring anyone within sight of the pole to stop and face the flag.
