Commons Park stretches along the South Platte River as a nineteen-acre expanse of restored wetlands and open lawns. It is defined by the sharp contrast between the native cottonwood forests and riparian meadows on its river side and the glass skyline of downtown Denver rising immediately to the east. Before the city established this park in the early two thousands, the land served as an industrial rail yard that had long ago buried the natural riverbanks under artificial fill and debris.
