Tavern on the Green is defined by a Victorian Gothic structure built in eighteen seventy to house two hundred Southdown sheep. Designed by architects Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould, the building served as a functional sheepfold for the flock that grazed in the nearby Sheep Meadow. You can still spot evidence of this history in the interior, where carvings of sheep remain on the fireplace and throughout the lobby.
